A similar process is under way in Britain. The Government believes that carbon capture and storage will be a cheaper way to control emissions than solar, wind, wave or nuclear technologies. Thus market forces encourage Britain to develop new techniques to burn coal, while Germany helps to wean the world off fossil fuels altogether. In terms of long-term potential, I would place my bet on the German approach. I lean across the counter and address the doctor sitting straight in front of me. He is my age, could easily be an acquaintance. He doesn’t look up. Instead, continuing to stare straight at his computer, he points at the other people standing around him. Without my being prissy, he was unbelievably rude. Speaking loudly now, I finally command someone’s attention. They tell me they haven’t a clue where the property might be. If it isn’t there, it isn’t there. I give up. This is just one story. I’ve had many hospital visits in the past two years, and with more than one friend. The medical care is good — or at least I think it is, how would I know? — once you can get someone to pay attention. But it’s hard to get people to accept that they are in charge, to tell the patient what’s wrong, to communicate about future treatment. Everyone is much more concerned about ensuring that a visitor doesn’t use a mobile phone and doesn’t turn up at the wrong time than they are to provide any information. The rudeness isn’t confined to visitors.

His unbending refusal to compromise came at a price. Some stores refused to stock his records and some venues refused to hold his concerts. In the 1980s he was dropped by his record company and his life fell apart. His songs about substance abuse became a self-fulfilling prophecy; he fell into drug addiction, his health declined and he was arrested and jailed for possession of cocaine. He even spent time on the run after he breached the terms of his parole.
By 2009, however, he had embarked upon an improbable comeback. He returned both to live performance and to the studio, recording his first album since 1994. Yet he refrained from claiming that he had finally beaten his drug demons and the fear of yet another drug bust never seemed far away.
Gil Scott-Heron was born on April 1, 1949, in Chicago, Illinois, but spent his childhood in Jackson, Tennessee, where he was brought up by his maternal grandmother. His father, Giles Heron, was of Jamaican descent, and was the first black player to appear for Glasgow Celtic FC, where he was nicknamed “The Black Arrow”.
On the death of his grandmother in 1962, Scott-Heron went to live with his mother in the Bronx in New York, where she sang in an amateur choir. His talent as a writer was evident in high school and he won a scholarship to The Fieldston School, prior to attending Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, alma mater of his greatest literary influence, the black writer Langston Hughes. At Lincoln, he met Brian Jackson, whose flute playing, electric piano and production skills would later make a vital contribution to Scott-Heron’s most successful albums.

With his mix of subversion and sophistication Gil Scott-Heron made a huge impact on the pop world and many rap and hip-hop artists cited him as an influence
But many of the theme songs to the black struggle against racism and poverty in America during the 1970s were written and delivered by ScottHeron, in a kind of jive poetry that paved the way for future generations of rap and hip-hop artists and led to him being dubbed “the black Bob Dylan”.
His music fused jazz, blues and soul with spoken word jeremiads in uncompromising fashion. Tall, nonchalant and above all, angry, he brought a sharp, literate, intelligence to songs about the superficiality of American consumerism, mass media brainwashing, white hypocrisy, the plight of the ghettos, poverty, unemployment, substance abuse, racism and homophobia.
At a time when most American protest was directed at the Vietnam war, Scott-Heron’s songs preached that there was another conflict going on closer to home on America’s streets.

The most popular conspiracy theory argued that Hess’s flight was a plot involving members of the British aristocracy and the intelligence services to broker a secret peace deal with the Nazis. A subsidiary theory held that MI6 might have deliberately lured Hess into a trap, with the false promise of a deal. Yet another set of conspiracies grew up around the circumstances of Hess’s death in Spandau prison in 1987, with some arguing that he was too frail, at 93, to have committed suicide by strangulation as the post-mortem examination found. Others believed that the man who died in Spandau was not Hess, but a double. Still others argued that he had been murdered by British agents. Hess himself knew that his arrival by parachute in a Scottish field was, to say the least, an unconventional diplomatic move. “My coming to England in this way is, as I realise, so unusual that nobody will easily understand it.”
Stalin was among those who suspected that it was part of a plot involving secret Anglo-German peace discussions that would have left the Soviet Union isolated. Churchill hotly denied this, telling Stalin: “When I make a statement of facts within my knowledge I expect it to be accepted.” Hess, it seems, had simply deluded himself into believing that he could broker a peace deal and set off in his Messerschmitt Bf 110 to secure it. It was, said Churchill, a “completely devoted and frantic deed of lunatic benevolence . . . He was a medical and not a criminal case.” Keith Jeffery’s account of what is in the MI6 files will not be the last word on the matter, because with the Hess flight — as with the Kennedy assassination, the moon landings, and any other hunting ground for conspiracy theorists — there can never be a last word. By the nature of conspiracy theory, anything that contradicts the theory must be part of the conspiracy. The authorised historian of MI6 says there was no MI6 conspiracy? Well, he would, wouldn’t he? And why, come to that, was the Hess story not included in the original hardback edition of the MI6 history? It is all very mysterious and suspicious. Except that it isn’t.

Hess was moved to a hospital at Abergavenny, Gwent, where he remained for the rest of the war. He was found guilty of crimes against peace at the Nuremberg war crimes trials in 1946 and sentenced to life imprisonment. He died in Spandau Prison, Berlin, in 1987 One curious dimension of the Hess affair was a request from the Ministry of Economic Warfare at the end of May 1941 “that the textile experts of our intelligence department should have an opportunity of examining Hess’s clothing. “It throws much light both on Germany’s textile deficiencies and on the different situations of different classes of the community,” it said. An examination in this case “would be particularly interesting” and “might possibly produce something of propaganda value”. Observing that during the First World War the Kaiser had apparently insisted on wearing “nothing but British underwear”, it was thought “it would be fun if Hess were to have followed this illustrious precedent”.Stewart Menzies, the head of MI6, was not convinced and, revealing that he was perhaps more of a Savile Row man himself, replied that Hess’s garments were “of the cheapest variety, and might well have been purchased at Marks & Spencer”. Menzies left the decision to Henry Hopkinson at the Foreign Office. “Do you have any objection,” he asked, “to my submitting H’s pants to test?” Hopkinson gave his approval, but no report survives as to the result. Hess’s pants are now held by the Imperial War Museum.After 70 years and countless conspiracy theories, MI6’s answer to the greatest wartime mystery of them all may be summed up simply: Rudolf Hess was out of his mind. That, broadly speaking, was the explanation put forward at the time by Churchill’s advisers (“mad . . . awkward . . . a lunatic”). It was also the reason given by Hitler for his deputy’s bizarre flight to Scotland in 1941. But because the circumstances of Hess’s arrival in Britain were so very strange, and the clamp of official secrecy so tight, the theories about what he was really up to have multiplied over the years.

 The documents appear to offer a glimpse into the way in which Mr Ecclestone operates his notoriously secret and financially tangled empire. Part of that empire includes the GP2 series, the gateway to Formula One for young talent such as Lewis Hamilton, which was set up by Mr Ecclestone and Flavio Briatore, his close friend, and was sold to CVC for an estimated £150 million in 2007. Two years later the flamboyant Italian and former team principal at Renault was banned from Formula One for life for cheating at the Singapore Grand Prix. He continues to enjoy Mr Ecclestone’s support.

It is understood that prosecutors also want to speak to Stephen Mullens, a London-based solicitor and tax specialist. Mr Mullens, who declined to comment, advised Mr Ecclestone when he transferred the family fortune into Jersey-registered trusts in the name of Slavica Ecclestone, then his wife, in the late 1990s. Since they divorced in 2009 she has become the tenth richest woman in Britain and is estimated to have assets totalling £734 million. With both daughters’ inheritances tied up in Bambino, Slavica will have a keen interest in the investigation as she prepares for the wedding of their youngest child, Petra, in August. For his part, Mr Ecclestone has vowed to continue running the sport as he enters his ninth decade — regardless of Mr Gribkowsky’s fate. He insists that CVC is “not worried at all”.

“Your most recent payment dated December 5, 2007, amounting to USD 5,000,000.00 did not fully cover the outstanding amount under the Agreement. Currently, there is still a balance of USD 2,229,130 outstanding. “Taking into account significant interest and devaluation losses . . . we hereby claim the outstanding amount of USD2,229,130 due for immediate payment and we ask you to fulfil your obligations as contracted.” This demand made Mr Ecclestone furious, according to a German source, who said that a London lawyer rang up Mr Gribkowsky’s office immediately after receiving the letter. “Hear that?” he is reported to have said, holding the receiver up to a whirring paper shredder. “That’s your letter.” A second document shows an agreement with a now defunct offshore company in Mauritius, First Bridge Holding. This time, it instructs an unnamed “mandator”, whom prosecutors suspect is Mr Ecclestone, to stump up “an initial sum of $4 million”, followed by “the sum of USD1.6 million”, for ten months, commencing August 2006. Yet another document shows a similar agreement between Mr Gribkowsky’s company and Lewington Invest, a company in the British Virgin Islands. It demands a further fee of $25 million, “payable in five equal instalments on the dates of August 30, September 15, September 30, October 15 and October 30, 2007”.
