Mark your calendars for an impressive and upcoming flyby of an asteroid that’s one of the larger
potentially perilous space rocks in the heavens – in terms of smacking the Earth in the future.
It’s the case of asteroid 2005 YU55, a round mini-world that is about 1,300 feet (400 meters) in
diameter. In early November, this asteroid will approach Earth within a scant 0.85 lunar
distances
I'm sort of impressed, no asteroid-that-might-kill-us-all fear mongering in the article? Actual scientists talking about how awesome it is that this asteroid is getting close enough to study? No "balancing" views from a crackpot spouting end of the world predictions?
Is this some sort of trick?
Lucifer's Hammer, eh?I hoped for more from that book. I guess it's not aging well. Some of the characters are very dated now, and the writing style lent itself more toward human drama than the grand scale epic it should have. When it worked, it worked very well..but sections of the book really drug on.
Yeah, but "Lucifer's Hammer" was about a comet impact. What you need is this:

(not to be confused with anything concerning Led Zeppelin)Should I panic or not? I just don't know anymore.Let's burn down the observatory so this never happens again!
Five bucks says it hits Japan.
Why are we not putting a satellite in orbit around this sucker just to see whats up? Or at least tagging it with something to gather some surface data for years to come?
Because we didn't see it coming 5 years in advance? Because you can't orbit something that small, because it generates basically no gravity? Because it's just a rock, so, you know, not very interesting.
