UN staff killed by angry mob in Afghanistan after pastor burns copy of Qur'an. In Florida

NY Times article:

Stirred up by a trio of angry mullahs who urged them to avenge the burning of a Koran at Florida church, thousands of protesters overran the compound of the United Nations in this northern Afghan city, killing at least 12 people, Afghan and United Nations officials said.
The dead included at least seven United Nations workers — five Nepalese guards and two Europeans, one of them a woman. None were Americans. Early reports, later denied by Afghan officials, said at least two of the dead had been beheaded.
Fark thread excerpts:
Group 1. Overall enlightenment
I'm sure this thread will be full of smart, well thought out comments that will raise the intellectual level...

ok, i can't finish that statement...
I say we do the same to you and the pastor. For inciting violence that directly led to the death of international aid workers.

Just for the record: there are about 1 billion Muslims who didn't use a Koran-b-que to go out and murder. And the ones that did, did so in response to an event they never witnessed or otherwise took place in, what with being halfway around the planet and all.

So, just maybe, do you think that advocating burning an American to death for using his right to free expression is a little over the top?
I'm pretty sure that freedom of speech isn't punishable by death in this country.
Terry Jones should be charged with first degree homicide. This is no different than yelling 'fire' in a crowded theater or deliberately inciting a riot

If some fundie christian reads your post and kills some hippies for revenge does that mean you should be charged too?
Religion, what would we do without it?

Fundie Christians would have done this a few hundred years ago. In a way they've evolved.

I don't think Fundamentalist Christians have evolved per se, just their radicalization has been discouraged by the rule of law, meaning only True Believers are going to plan to bring people under the iron boot of Jesus. Fundamentalist Islam is largely encouraged, or not actively discouraged really, so it continues in existence. Many second and third generation progeny of those who immigrated to the United States that I know personally are still somewhat Muslim, but in the same way that many Americans are somewhat Christian. No specific religion is the "enemy," Religious radicalization is.

Those who fuel the fire are just as guilty as the fire itself.

The fire is guilty?

/Burn the fire!

Group 2. Let's Kill the Christian zealots

"We have a huge stack of death threats," she said. "We take precautions. I have a handgun. A lot of us have concealed weapons permits. We're a small church and we don't have money to hire security."

Well here's a thought: don't be an asshole.

"We put the Koran on trial and we did burn it," she said. Ms. Ingram said she and other church members were no more concerned about their safety than before the burning and the killings of the United Nations workers in Afghanistan. "We have a huge stack of death threats," she said. "We take precautions. I have a handgun.

This is outrageous, they aren't even sorry that their disgusting chauvinism and bigotry directly led to fatal reprisals against innocent people working for the UN in Afghanistan.

And what's their answer to this event? Start an American war on Islam.

This isn't the Crusades, you repugnant, xenophobic zealots. Try religious tolerance.

I say put down all the animals involved.

The voices in my head agree with you.
You know, I would truly admire Rev. Jones' passion and style if he were to demonstrate his devotion to Christ over in Kabul. You know, set a few Quran ablaze in the city square. Then he could go sit at the right hand of his savior for eternity.

It's really too bad that the rapture will never happen. If only all these religious assholes would just leave the planet.

Group 3 Hang on it was the muslims who over-reacted

Farkers, ease up. You've blamed everyone but the murderers.

I say we hold all Muslims responsible for the crimes of a few people, then invade all Muslim countries and turn them into democracies.

Who's with me?

Please go look up the word 'directly' in a dictionary.

I'm getting a kick out of everyone blaming the pastor for the deaths of the UN workers, when we all know if it was a Muslim Imam burning a Bible, and some Christians rioted and killed some UN workers, this thread would be about how the Christians over-reacted and are all murderous bigots, etc etc
